Transformative Care That Feels Like Family

After working in an insurance-based practice model for over 10 years, I began to realize it was challenging to provide the type of care I had envisioned. I had a limited ability to balance patient care along with several other aspects of my life in this model. I eventually concluded that I was done providing patient care. Now, with so many personal investments with patients, education, and my personal life, I found this difficult to imagine.

I sought out other work opportunities including medical education. During my career change process, I included actively seeking out ways that I could return to practicing patient care. I came across the DPC model and found hope in this specific healthcare model. I anticipate balance, and most importantly my ability to return to practicing patient care.

Accessible Care

With Direct Care, there are zero copays, and improved access to your doctor.

Ease of Access

With access to convenient online scheduling and unprecedented direct access to your doctor, Direct Care eliminates the bottlenecks commonly experienced in healthcare.

No Insurance

Direct Primary Care practices cut out the middlemen; like insurance companies. This frees doctors to provide great care at fair prices.
Finally, healthcare that serves YOUR needs, instead of those of the insurance companies!

Doctor Freedom

As part of your Direct Care program, your doctor is not hampered by insurance complications, and office bureaucracy. Your doctor is free to treat you with no barriers to the highest-level of medical care that they can offer.

Why the name Ohana Medical Care?

For those who know me, understand how much my family and I love Hawaiian culture, history, beaches, and beauty. It is because of this love of all things Hawaiian we decided to include the term Ohana, meaning family. I also feel that the term “family” is directly connected to the DPC model. With a plan for smaller patient panel sizes, you will become our FAMILY. I hope to have more time together in appointments, fewer wait times, no call centers, and the ability to send direct messages. I also acknowledge that things like ER services and specialists may need to be utilized in appropriate situations.

Dr. Justin Parkinson, DO

About

As a board-certified Family Medicine Osteopathic physician and Ada County native, Dr. Justin Parkinson brings a passion for partnering in the care of his patients and their families. Shared decision-making is the main care model within this practice. Utilizing the DO (osteopathic), whole-person approach to your health with a focus on proactive and preventive patient care, as opposed to what some may call sick care or even protocol care.

What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct primary care, or DPC for short, is a simple idea that solves a very complex problem.

Here’s a thought experiment: what if you took all the worst parts about healthcare in America — insurance companies and their mountains of paperwork, business-minded hospital systems that don’t care about patient satisfaction, and all the shadowy middlemen trying to eliminate price transparency — and you threw them all out the window. That’s DPC in a nutshell.

It’s clear that the current system doesn’t care about providing great care. Have you ever scheduled an appointment months in advance, only to sit in the waiting room for an hour, followed by an unsatifying 10 minute doctor visit? That’s par for the course these days.

DPC is different.

As a DPC patient, you forge a relationship with a doctor that knows you. No more scheduling months in advance; your DPC doctor is at your fingertips. If you need an in-person visit, you can usually book one the very next day. Your doctor will stay on top of your health: running preventative tests, diagnosing you when you’re sick, prescribing medicines (and often dispensing them to you directly at wholesale prices — no extra trip to the pharmacy!), negotiating low prices on blood tests and scans, quickly addressing any health concerns or questions you have, and—if necessary—coordinating your care with specialists and hospitals. The vast majority of DPC doctors give you their cell phone number so you can text them with any questions!

How is this possible? By cutting insurance out of the picture. Insurance is fundamentally incompatible with providing comprehensive, compassionate care. When a doctor bills your insurance, they are forced to submit an itemized list of each and every medical service they provided. If they don’t, they won’t get paid. But—surprise, surprise—no insurance company will pay a doctor for answering one of your texts, reminding you to avoid red meat, answering on the first ring when you call, opening the door for you when you arrive at the office, or asking about your family!

In DPC, you pay a flat monthly membership fee, usually around the size of your cell phone bill. You can pay with your credit card—no more clipboards with pages of insurance paperwork.

If it seems like everything is a subscription these days, that’s because it’s the best way for a business to offer a high-quality service and excellent support over a long period of time. What if Netflix nickel-and-dimed you for every episode of Stranger Things you watched? It would be awful, that’s what. DPC is like Netflix: you get access to nearly unlimited care for one low monthly price.

This is healthcare like you’ve never experienced it. It’s like having a doctor in the family.

More about Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopaths (DO) are professionals trained in hands on manipulative treatments to help restore proper body structure to improve your function and often promote healing.
As part of their education, DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. Using OMT, your DO can effectively treat your muscles and joints to relieve pain, promote healing, and increase overall mobility.

OMT is often used to treat muscle pain, but it can also help provide relief for patients with asthma, sinus disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, and migraines. In many cases, OMT can be used to complement, or even replace drugs or surgery.*

This can be done with techniques safe for everyone including soft tissue, fascial distortion, counter-strain, or other indirect techniques. There are also well-known adjustments that involve articulation, which can make the “cracking” sound most are familiar with.
An Osteopath is also qualified to offer trigger point injections, dry needling, and joint injections when needed. These will all be available with your membership.

  • Specifically, chronic pain management with the use of pain medications will not be offered.
    • We will offer appropriate referrals to pain clinics, counseling, or even addiction centers.
    • For acute pain we will prescribe as needed for a very limited time with scheduled plans to taper.
    • As an osteopath we hope to find other ways to help treat your pain.
